Last night I watched an amazing heart warming episode of One Born every minuet UK. It put it all into reality for me. One of the ladies that came into to give birth was a physically disabled lady aged 40. She and her husband had been married for 20+ years and finally having their first baby.  This lady was had quiet a lot of spastisity down one side of her body which made her movements challenging.

She had been this way for 27 years after having been hit by a car walking to the sweet store after Sunday church. She was a married and content lady. But the heart strings started when every new nurse walked in and sat with her that she asked if they were going to take away her baby. She was so fearful of this. Even when in the end stages of labour she still had this fear.

The other thing that amazed me was how right she was about her baby was going to be born. By the end of her very long labour (there was at least 2 shift changes) She kept telling them they were going to have to pull this baby from her as she was too weak. They kept saying, no you are going to push this baby out.

In the end after a long time pushing, you guessed it, a forceps delivery. Why do the medical profession fail to listen to the mother? Yes she was a first time mum, yes she has a physical disability but why is that any excuse not to listen to the woman?

But it also inspired me to remember women with disabilities give birth every day. Some even have multiple children. What is stopping me? One stray remark from a medico who should learn to keep his mouth shut. Yeah Right. I am a fully grown adult. There is only one who gets to decide and he is not on earth!
